Weekly Reading Update 7/15 - 7/21!

Another week, another update! As always, click the title for more information.

Man, with all the staff shortages at work, I’m exhausted! And alas, that doesn’t translate to quiet, relaxing nights at home - nope, I spend that night worrying about the next day. Also, Saturday was my birthday, so I might have had a few birthday celebrations, but the evenings out spent with friends and family was more than worth the lack of reading time. I wasn’t a total slouch, though!

I continued my obsession with Jill Sorenson by reading Passion and Peril (an anthology she wrote with Suzanne Brockmann), and Island Peril - a novella. The Suzanne Brockmann story was just so-so for me, but I loved Jill Sorenson’s story. Both the Passion and Peril, and the Island Peril stories were short - and I was blown away by how deep a story Jill Sorenson can write in so few pages. Only one book left in the Aftershock series (Backwoods!), and then that’s it. There is a spin-off series, so of course I’ll be checking that out as well!

Lynsay Sands is a long-time favorite author, and I got the chance to review her newest book, Lady Pirate, for Romance Reviews Today. This is actually a re-release, with the book originally coming out in 2001. It definitely holds up, though. Lynsay Sands has a great sense of humor, and it shows with her characters and the situations they get themselves in. She has a new Argeneau book coming out in a couple months - can’t wait! I love her historical romances, but her Argeneau series is my absolute favorite.

Somehow, in the middle of all the books I was reading to review, I managed to fit in two library books that were due - Missed Connections by Tamara Mataya and At Any Cost by Mandy Baxter. I greatly enjoyed both of these, but Missed Connections made it onto my wish-list, and Jack (the hero), added himself to my growing list of book boyfriends. But I’d recommend both to any contemporary romance fan that wants to try something new.

Finally, I also read Dirtiest Secret by J. Kenner. I actually read this on Sunday (the 17th), so that I could read and review Hottest Mess as part of J. Kenner’s blog tour. The first book moved a little slow for me, so it did take me some time - I took quite a few breaks. But man, the second book dives right in. I also attempted to read The Angel Knights by Mary Ting, a young adult paranormal novella - I had to DNF it. And as someone who loves angels, it hurt, let me tell you.

See you next week!

Happy Reading!

Review: HITCHED PART 2 by Kendall Ryan

Release Date: July 19th, 2016

My Review: I'm getting pretty frustrated with Olivia, all. Noah is such a good guy, he's done so much to make her as comfortable with the awkward situation as possible. He's tried to show her that he is a good guy. He's talked to her friend to find out what she likes, he dropped everything to help her when her ex-boyfriend threatened her with blackmail. And yet, Olivia acts like he's untrustworthy, or making a play, at every turn. Noah is so book-boyfriend-worthy that it makes me sad to see how hard he's working, and yet how much he's mistrusted.

Of course, then he goes and does that stupid thing right at the end. Oh man. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I've never wanted to whack someone upside the head more than I did in that moment. I like Noah and Olivia. They make me frustrated sometimes, but I like them. And I like them together - I just need Noah to use his brain a little more, and Olivia to shut hers off now and again. But you can already see them moving towards the Happily Ever After that they both deserve.

Cover Lovin': Fits perfectly with part one.

Recommendation: This is a direct sequel, so you're definitely going to need to read the first book.

Final Rating: THREE AND A HALF out of FIVE stars (3.5/5). I'm really enjoying this story overall, but this second part made me frustrated more than anything.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Arranged marriage? Check. Cocky new husband? Check. It's a marriage of convenience—one I’m determined to keep strictly professional. I can't be stupid enough to fall for this sexy playboy's charm or advances. I have to be strong, even if he is my husband. Except he has a huge cock with an even bigger ego, and his main goal in life seems to be getting me to stroke both. The arrogant bastard is like sweet, sugary candy for my libido. I know he’s bad for me. But I want to devour every wicked inch of him. With his sexual prowess and experience, I know he’ll be explosive in the bedroom. And since we’re stuck together for the foreseeable future—keeping up this marriage charade long enough to turn the company profitable again—I deserve something to look forward to at the end of a long workday, right? What could one little taste hurt? This is volume 2 in the Imperfect Love series.

“What’s wrong?” I ask. “Just a little tight, is all.” I inhale through my nose. I have to shove the pregnancy stuff to the back corner of my brain. We’re a long way off from Olivia letting me pump her full of my semen anyhow, so why am I stressing about it now? The first step is showing her how compatible we can be. And that starts now. I smile at her. “Sit tight. I’ll be right back.” I grab a bottle of massage oil from the hall closet and return to the living room. The soft jazz music seems to float in the air, creating a pleasant buzz in the atmosphere. Olivia’s eyes widen when I rejoin her on the couch, but she doesn’t question me. “I’ll give you a massage,” I suggest. “Take off your sweatshirt.” Olivia flinches, chewing on her lip while she watches me. “But I’m not wearing anything underneath.” That’s the idea. “I promise not to look.” She hesitates for another second, then turns her back to me and pulls her shirt over her head, dropping it to the floor. The creamy canvas in front of me is one to be admired. The twin dimples in her lower back near the band of her leggings would make lesser men weep. I warm a few drops of oil between my palms and rest my hands on her stiff shoulders. “Relax. Okay?”

Marry the girl I’ve had a crush on my whole life? Check. Inherit a hundred-billion-dollar company? Check. Produce an heir… Wait, what? I have ninety days to knock up my brand-new fake wife. There’s only one problem—she hates my guts. And in the fine print of the contract? The requirement that we produce an heir. She can’t stand to be in the same room with me. Says she’ll never be in my bed. But I’ve never backed down from a challenge and I’m not about to start now. Mark my words—I’ll have her begging for me, and it won’t take ninety days.   On the heels of her smash hit and New York Times bestselling SCREWED series, Kendall Ryan brings you HITCHED, a romantic comedy that delivers heart and heat. A NYC playboy turned business mogul has ninety days to win over the woman he's always desired in order to save his father's company. One tiny problem: She hates his guts.

Review & Excerpt: THE SAPPHIRE AFFAIR by Lauren Blakely

Release Date: July 12th, 2016

My Review: This is the first thing I've read by Lauren Blakely, but I can see why she's a well-liked author. This book had me hooked from the very beginning, and not just because I'm a sucker for heist novels, which this very much is. Blakely's writing just sucks you in, the story is stellar, and the characters really steal the show. Jake cares about his family, and he has a good sense of humor - both things that really stick out about him right from the beginning, and continue to show throughout the novel. Steph has a good heart, and a strong drive to make her business work, and to get her life back on track. But what really stuck out to me was how genuine her feelings are when it comes to her stepfather. There is a very good chance he has stolen a lot of money from people who can't afford it, but it's obviously hard for her to see him as a bad guy while also seeing him as the man who raised her. You can really feel her struggle with it, and I'm glad the author didn't just glaze over this, but truly made it part of Steph's dilemma.

I know this is mostly my own fault, since I didn't look too deeply into the series, but I didn't realize this was a cliffhanger. I was getting more and more nervous as the story progressed, thinking there was no way the author could wrap everything up with only ten percent of the book left. And while the cliffhanger made me instantly desperate for the next book, I appreciated that she didn't just try to throw everything together at the end. I'd rather this spread over several books, so everything progresses naturally, than to have it wrapped up willy-nilly, and not-so-neatly.

I will definitely be reading the next book, and I can't wait to check out more by this author. This was a one-sitting read for me because I just couldn't put it down. It had everything I needed - a good story, amazing characters, a believable (and hot!) romance, and plot twists that had me drooling for more.

Cover Lovin': Oh my, yes.

Recommendation: This is the beginning of a new series, so no prior knowledge necessary. Also: Cliffhanger alert! So prepare yourself.

Final Rating: FOUR AND A HALF out of FIVE stars! (4.5/5). Loved this, couldn't put it down. It was a one-sitting read, and I even stayed up super late to finish it, because I simply had to know what was going to happen next.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
EXCERPT:

“Let’s make it a double,” he said, and after they chatted more about fish and the sea and the Islands, he pointed to the dartboard. “Since you have that dart certification and all, any chance you can give me a few pointers?” he asked, standing up to grab a dart from the board. He returned and held it out to her. She rose and moved closer, and when she reached for the end, he wrapped a hand around her wrist and tugged her in close.
Just like that. The gauntlet was thrown. The move was made. She was in his arms. Poised. For something more. For this moment to unspool into something else. A ribbon of heat raced through her body as she catalogued everything. His gaze held her hostage. His green eyes blazed darkly as he stared at her like he wanted to eat her up. That fierce look made her shudder. She was so close she could breathe him in, and his skin smelled so damn good. Like sunshine and showers. And he was hard everywhere. Not just there, because she wasn’t exactly in that spot, but his arms, and his abs, and his legs.
His fingers curled around her waist, gripping her as Jack Johnson sang about banana pancakes and pretending it’s the weekend all the time.
“Three things,” he whispered, his voice all rough and hot, turning her on before he even uttered another word. “One, I want to kiss you. Two, I’m going to kiss you. Three, if you don’t want me to, say no now. Otherwise . . .”
He inched closer. She parted her lips, and a small sigh escaped. “Yes.”
She closed her eyes and waited. In that second before his lips met hers, the wondrous thrill of anticipation weaved through her body. The hope that kissing a stranger named Jake in a bar would be worth it. That he wouldn’t kiss like a slobbery Saint Bernard, all tongue and exuberance. Nor like a schoolboy, hell-bent on vacuuming up her lips. Call her greedy, call her needy, or just call her a woman who hadn’t been kissed well in a long while.
But she wanted that kiss.
The kind that made your knees weak.
That sent your heart fluttering.
That spread warmth on a sweet, shivery path through your chest.

ABOUT THE SAPPHIRE AFFAIR (Jewel Novel #1):

Bounty hunter Jake Harlowe knows how to track a criminal. So when a group of swindled shareholders hires him to trail their former CEO, Jake expects a quick trip to the Cayman Islands to close another case. Until a devastatingly beautiful woman gets in the way.

Steph Anderson is visiting the Caymans for a rock climbing and dive trip—or so she tells Jake. She’s really trying to find out whether or not her stepfather embezzled money from his company. The last thing Steph needs is the distraction of a sexy, charming man whose kisses drive her wild.

Soon, the pair discover they’re after the same target—and millions in jewels. While Jake can’t be certain Steph isn’t working for her stepfather, and Steph can’t be certain Jake isn’t after the diamonds for himself, they can agree the heat between them is intense, and neither can deny the passion for long.

But the morning after, Steph discovers that she just might have slept with the enemy, and now she’ll have to outwit him to get everything she needs…

Review: HOTTEST MESS by J. Kenner!

Release Date: July 12th, 2016

My Review: First off, let me say I read books one and two back-to-back, and I highly suggest that for any interested readers, because book two picks up right where book one left off. This makes it a very fluid transition from one to the other. And I will probably find myself re-reading book two before starting book three - because I will be desperately seeking book three when it releases. For me, book one felt a bit like walking through syrup - it's not that the book was bad, it just felt slow. Book two had none of those issues - I breezed through Hottest Mess, and couldn't put it down. I don't know if the pacing was better in the second book, or what, but it was a lot smoother.

It's hard to just review the second book, considering this is a trilogy and they're all so tied together, but I will do my best. I know this series is supposed to be a romance, and love is definitely a big factor, but for me, this feels more like a dark suspense than anything. I care far more about Dallas and Deliverance than I do about Dallas and Jane's relationship. And I have my suspicions about who The Woman is, but part of me hopes I'm wrong. This reminds me a little of Asking For It, by Lilah Pace - not the story, but the general tone of the book. And that's not a bad thing, the Lilah Pace books were amazingly well done. My heart breaks for what happened to Dallas and Jane - but especially Dallas, who suffered more (and longer) than Jane did. And I think this book does well showing how trauma suffered in adolescence can affect you in adulthood.

Cover Lovin': Fits well with the first book in the series.

Recommendation: This is a direct sequel, the middle of a trilogy, so you will want to read book 1, Dirtiest Secret, first. And be on the lookout for book 3, Sweetest Taboo coming October 2016!

Final Rating: I'm going to go with THREE AND A HALF out of FIVE stars (3.5/5) on this one. The pacing was better than book one, but I'm marking it down some because the romance just feels like sex and shame/awkwardness, not a true driving factor. It seems like the real story is the kidnapping, which should be a subplot (a major one, but still).

Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

hottest mess available now   9781101967478 (1)The S.I.N. series continues with the seductive follow-up to the Stark International Novel Dirtiest Secret, from the New York Times bestselling author of “red-hot and angsty” fiction that “keeps readers guessing” (Publishers Weekly, on Under My Skin). No one can know about our love—and hiding only makes it hotter. Dallas Sykes has a reputation. He is known for his parties, his money, and the countless women on his arm. Yet the Dallas I know is a different man—darker, smarter, and unbearably sexy. Just one look from him can leave me breathless; the anticipation of his touch can make me lose control. Inextricably bound by our past, we keep each other’s secrets. And while there are people who have the power to hurt us, it’s the truth that threatens us most of all. Dallas can be mine only behind closed doors, our passion as searing as it is forbidden. Yet nothing in this world has ever felt so desperately, deliciously right. Hottest Mess is intended for mature audiences.

hottest mess teaser 1       hottest mess teaser 2     hottest mess teaser 3       dscoverFrom the New York Times bestselling author of such “racy, sizzling Stark novels” (RT Book Reviews) as Release Me and Say My Name comes the provocative first Stark International Novel—the beginning of the S.I.N. series. It was wrong for us to be together, but it was even harder to be apart. The memory of Dallas Sykes burns inside of me. Everyone knows him as a notorious playboy, a man for whom women and money are no object. But to me, he’s still the one man I desperately crave—yet the one I can never have. Dallas knows me better than anyone else. We bear the same scars, the same darkness in our past. I thought I could move on by staying away, but now that we’re drawn together once more, I can’t fight the force of our attraction or the temptation to make him mine. We’ve tried to maintain control, not letting ourselves give in to desire. And for so long we’ve told ourselves no—but now it’s finally time to say yes. Dirtiest Secret is intended for mature audiences.
