Review: A MAN OF HONOR by Miranda Liasson!

Release Date: June 20th, 2016

Type: Brother's Best Friend, Contemporary, Romance, Military hero, Damaged, "For your own good," Just Kiss Already!

About the Book: Former Army Captain and venture capitalist Preston Guthrie has always had a thing for Cat Kingston, but he never felt like he could date his best friend’s sister. Plus, he’s a wrong-side-of-the-tracks guy and she’s a white-picket-fence kind of woman. Yet when they met again just before he was deployed, sparks flew. A fire ignited. And the heat was hot. For the first time, he thought a relationship with her might be possible…until an injury in the war changed everything…

Journalist Cat Kingston had a rough couple of years, surviving a broken engagement and the loss of her job. But connecting with Preston last fall seemed right. They shared steamy Skype sessions while he was overseas—until he was wounded, and cut her off without explanation. Now he’s back in town to be the Best Man for her sister’s wedding…and she wants answers.

Preston’s struggling with a leg wound, but the war scarred him on the inside, too. When Cat pays him a surprise visit and her brother catches them in a compromising position, Preston tells him they’re dating. He’s not sure how he can spend the entire wedding week fake-dating her when the chemistry between them feels anything but… [Description from Goodreads.com]

My Review: You guys know I'm a sucker for the brother's best friend trope. I can't resist. I assume because I don't really have older siblings, and therefore never had them, or their friends, teasing me when I was younger - so, you know, I can romanticize it a bit. So of course, I jumped at the chance to read and review this book. And add to that the fact that our dreamy hero Preston is a military man? Well, I was amazed I was able to keep myself from melting right then and there.

Guys, this book was great. Seriously. I loved seeing Preston fight his feelings, and watching Cat fight right back. Sure, there was some cheese - pretending to be in a relationship to save face? C'mon, there had to be better ways to handle that. But as cheesetastic as it might have been, it still added an interesting dynamic to the story, and their relationship.

But the best part about this book was watching the slow burn between them. Sometimes there were flash-bang moments, when they would collide and kiss (or more!), until sanity brought Preston and Cat back to earth. But it was that simmering connection, pressing them together more and more, that made them realize they had to be together, because they couldn't be apart. That, right there, is what made this book a great read. I didn't want to put it down. Don't miss out on this one. And you better believe I will be checking out more by this author in the future!

Cover Lovin': Nice! And I appreciate the inclusion of Preston's tattoo. Also, I've read several of Entangled Publishing's Indulgence line, and this fits right along with those.

Recommendation: No prior knowledge necessary. But while this isn't technically a series, this author has written a book featuring Cat's sister prior to this.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)! An awesome, un-put-downable read!

Whoever this woman was, he was certain she was not a prostitute. His friends weren’t that tacky. But no reason he couldn’t play along for a bit. Even with his bum leg, he’d had plenty of offers from sympathetic young things pining to do their patriotic duty for a fallen soldier. He’d never been that desperate. Still wasn’t. But he’d love a distraction. Love to forget everything for just a few moments: the pain, the hell, the woman he’d left in the dust. The lady in black sashayed across the room to stand directly behind him, where he couldn’t easily turn to see her face. She looped cool hands over his eyes, leaning her elbows on the top of his chair. Raindrops rolled off her jacket and landed on his neck, sending a slight shiver cascading down his back. A clean, delicate fragrance he couldn’t quite place enveloped him in a cloud of scent. “What would you like tonight, soldier?” Her voice was smooth as silk, but her hands trembled, making him think she must be young, inexperienced. She brushed her lips softly along his neck. He would put a stop to this nonsense in a minute, but God, it felt too damn good to be touched. The image that played before his eyes, stabbing his heart with the same immutable pain as his worthless leg, was of another woman, not vampy, not sultry. Soft blond hair, a smile as sweet as homemade sugar cookies at Christmas. More slender than curvy, but just right for his tastes. There’d been a time before his injury when he’d almost believed he could make up for his shitty upbringing and be the man she needed. But not anymore. And not ever. The war had changed all that. That scent. Lavender, that’s what it was. Sweet and old fashioned, a huge contrast to her provocative behavior. Familiar. And that voice, too, once you peeled off the layers of that phony lilt. His heart accelerated, his senses sharpening with suspicion. “Why are you here?” he asked as casually as he could manage while he reached up his hands and curved them around her wrists. Slender, just like hers. “Your friends sent me to show you a good time,” she said. He ran his hands lightly up her arms, stopping just below her elbow. His heart pumped equal parts dread and anticipation through his body. Too many coincidences had raised his spy sense. Her timidity, the disguise, the sweet smell that had permeated his dreams every bloody night in the hot, arid desert. This was no stripper. Or dancer. Or whatever masquerade she was playing at. He didn’t know how or why, but he’d recognize Catherine Kingston if he was blind and deaf. His hands stilled at her elbows. For one moment, he stroked the soft skin, enjoying the forbidden feel of her. Then he tightened his hold, pivoted his shoulders, and sent her tumbling into his lap. The hood tipped back, and he found himself staring into a pair of angry eyes the color of a September sky. “What the—” She struggled against him, but he didn’t ease up. His leg might be just about useless, but everywhere else, he was lock-grip strong. He’d pinned her as easily as a judo master’s takedown. “What the hell are you doing here?” he asked. teaser 1 About Miranda Liasson: Miranda Liasson-2-2 Miranda Liasson loves to write stories about courageous but flawed characters who find love despite themselves, because there’s nothing like a great love story. Weekly Reading Update 6/17 - 6/23/16!

Another week, another update! As always, click the title for more information.

It’s been another full week for me. I started feeling really poorly Monday morning, and ended up having to leave work early, and then stay home Tuesday. Since I couldn’t do much else but lay there and whine, I got a fair amount of reading done. Reviews are scheduled for the next week, so you’ll be seeing some of what entertained me while I was sick. The rest is below!

Another week of graphic novels - a bunch came in for me at once, and they’re easy and fast to read, so I usually read those first, so I can return them faster. I read Batman and Robin vol 7: Robin Rises by Peter Tomasi. I cannot tell you how happy I am to see Damien again. Batman and Robin just isn’t the same without.. You know.. ROBIN. Following that was Teen Titans vol 1: Blinded by the Light by Will Pfiefer. Red Robin features heavily in Robin Wars (surprise surprise), so I wanted to read more with this character - this was the only thing I could find on short notice. Next was The Astonishing Ant-man vol 1: Everybody Loves Team-ups by Nick Spencer. I enjoy Ant-man as a character, but this volume just felt meh to me. And finally, I finished the Deadpool Killogy by reading Deadpool Kills Deadpool by Cullen Bunn. It was truly hilarious to see the different versions of Deadpool. Worth a read if you like The Merc with a Mouth.

After binging on some review books I had been looking forward to, I moved on to Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace. As you’ve seen in a few previous weeks, I’m working my way through the Tor.com novellas that have been releasing in the past year. Every single one I’ve read thus far has been fantastic - and this book was no exception to that rule. I was so completely amused. It’s weird, it’s quirky, and it’s exactly the type of odd that I love. I already have book two to start reading!

So I’ve been working my way through the Unfinished Hero series by Kristen Ashley. Guys, these books drive me insane. I think I hate them. I roll my eyes while reading them. But after I finish… I can’t stop thinking about it. I can still find plenty to rant about, but it’s like they get under my skin. Heck, it was while I was ranting about book two that I paused mid-rant, and requested book three - which amused my friend to no end. I actually bought Knight, the first book. Why?! And guess what. As soon as I finished Raid this week… I requested book four, Deacon.

As part of my library’s staff summer reading challenge, we are filling out bingo cards. Each box has a different task we’re supposed to complete to fill the square, and when we get a bingo, it’s one entry towards a prize. The boxes are all reading/listening related, some examples: “an audiobook from OneClickDigital,” “Coworker Recommendation,” and “Juvenile Fiction.” It’s fun to read outside of my usual genres. For A book adapted into a movie, I read Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx. I read this years ago in college for a literature and film class, but that was forever ago. It was nice to revisit it.

Happy Reading!

About INK ENDURING
The Montgomery Ink series continues with a forbidden love between three friends and a past that they can’t escape. Jake Gallagher knew from the moment he saw Maya that she was the one for him—it had the same breath-taking intensity as when he’d first set eyes on Border. Only life never turns out the way one plans, and now he’s falling for someone else...or at least he thinks he is. Maya Montgomery never should have looked past the friendship she already had. Now that she has, she can’t stop thinking about Jake and what he means to her. When a mysterious stranger from Jake’s past shows up at their door, she’s forced to admit that if she doesn’t take the risk of a lifetime, she’ll regret it for the rest of her days. Border Gentry walked away without a second glance once because of what could happen if he let go, but now he’s back and ready to see what he’s missed. He’s been on the road a long time and has seen things no man should ever see, yet once he rediscovers the broody Jake and meets the inked and fierce Maya, they’re like a balm to his soul and he realizes what path his future should take. It will take more than sizzling chemistry and a heat that never dies for the three of them to overcome their pasts. And when someone from the outside wants to stand in their way, it’s not only their hearts on the line…but also their lives.

EXCERPT:

His phone buzzed, and he looked down at the incoming text. Alarm crawled up his spine, and he gritted his teeth. “I need to go.”

Jake frowned at him. “What do you mean? Don’t you think we need to talk?”

Border put his phone away and nodded. “I know we do, and we will when I get back, but it’s a work thing I can’t get out of.”

“What do you do for work?” Maya asked.

He met the woman’s eyes and felt a connection immediately. The type of connection he’d only felt with one other person in his life— Jake.

What the hell?

“I protect people,” he said finally. “And I need to go. But Maya, talk to him. Ask him what’s going on. You know my past with him. Ask him. And be open.” He didn’t know why he said that. But he did.

And with that, he picked up his keys off the counter and made his way to the couple. When he leaned forward and pressed his lips to Jake’s temple, the three of them froze.

He hadn’t meant to do it, but it had seemed as natural as breathing. And then he surprised himself yet again when he did the same to Maya. “I’ll be back. Nice to meet you.”

He left them standing in the living room, staring at his back as he closed the door behind him. What the hell had he been thinking? What was he doing?

He wanted Jake. He’d always wanted him but had been too afraid to do anything about it. But he also wanted Maya to be with Jake because the damn woman made Jake happy. He had no idea what he would do next, or even if the choice was in his hands since he’d left the two of them alone.

Either way, something was going to change, something big, and he would have to put it aside so he could work on other things. Because someone needed him in order to stay alive, and there was no way he would lose another person because of his choices.

His heart ached at the thought of what he’d seen the last time he’d failed, and he pushed it away. He wouldn’t fail. He wouldn’t lose this one.

And he wouldn’t lose Jake. Not again.

And as for Maya? Well, he’d figure that out, as well.

About Carrie Ann Ryan

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born. Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

Review: UP IN FLAMES by Abbi Glines

Release Date: June 28th, 2016

Type: New Adult, Series, Series Finale, Book 13, Rosemary Beach, Contemporary, From hate-her to love-her

About the Book: The villain of Rosemary Beach finally gets her own happy ending in the long-awaited final novel of the #1 New York Times bestselling new adult romance series by Abbi Glines.

The blockbuster #1 New York Times bestselling Rosemary Beach series ends with a bang when the troubled character readers love to hate gets her very own happily ever after in this eagerly anticipated and overwhelmingly requested story. Known for causing problems for everyone in Rosemary Beach, Nan has been growing up lately, and she’s finally taking center stage—and finding love with the man she least expected. [Synopsis from Goodreads.com]

My Review: Guys, I can't believe I'm saying this... but I like Nan. She has, for sure, been a huge villain throughout the entire Rosemary Beach series - partially because she's related to a good portion of them, and therefore demanding of her relatives' attention. But I can't believe it. Abbi Glines actually made me feel bad for her. Nan's gotten better towards the end of the series, sure, but she is still a self-centered witch. Or.. she was. And I'm not one for love triangles, that trope has been done to death, but Glines manages to throw a weird wrench into the traditional love triangle plot to make it feel different enough to work.

Nan finds herself torn between Major and Gannon, and frankly, for a while there.. I didn't know who to root for. Honestly, I hated them both, at least a little, and in different ways. But I also saw something good in both of them. I think Major was what Nan thought she wanted, whereas Gannon was what she needed. Anyone familiar with the series knows how much of a handful Nan can be - and Gannon is the perfect foil for her mood swings and catty moments.

Normally, what keeps me reading Glines' books are the characters. I've always found the stories to be okay, but nothing spectacular. But the past few Rosemary Beach books have shown a lot of promise, and even made me look forward to the next one. But Up In Flames had me hooked the whole way through. This was a one-sitting read for me, because I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen, and how everything was going to be solved. And even though this is the final Rosemary Beach book, there better be a spin-off, because what happens to a certain character absolutely cannot be the end!

And for those of you that just keep coming back for the steamy scenes - because yes, Abbi Glines knows her way around some good, hot scenes - trust me, Up In Flames has the best stuff yet.

Cover Lovin': Good. Fits the rest of the series, and it definitely caught my eye while browsing.

Recommendation: As Nan has been a constant character throughout the Rosemary Beach series, and her escapades are therefore widely known - it would help to have some prior knowledge of Nan before reading this.

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!! I can't believe how much I liked this, especially since how I have been a Nan-hater since the very beginning. But really, this blew me away. And yeah.. whew, Gannon really did it for me. And he really is the perfect foil for Nan. Honestly, I hope we get to visit Rosemary Beach again in the future.

Make sure to pre-order your copy of Up In Flames by Abbi Glines today. You won't want to miss Nan's story!
Happy Reading!

ABOUT EASY KISSES:

The Boudreaux Series. Sexy. Intriguing. Easy.

Simon Danbury, an internationally sought after motivational speaker, helps women from all walks of life with love, self-esteem, dating and career building skills. Handsome, witty and wealthy, Simon seemingly has everything a man could want.

But appearances can be deceiving.

While Simon may have the answers for millions of women all over the world, when it comes to his own love life, he’s a giant, sexy mess. Divorced, and convinced that he’ll never love again, the very last thing he expects is one Charly Boudreaux.

Charly doesn’t want to be at this seminar in the middle of nowhere, but her sister made her go. She’s the one who has her life together. Great career, amazing family, nice home, and loyal friends. So what if she doesn’t have a man? She doesn’t need one. If she’s learned anything in her almost thirty years, it’s that men are more trouble than they’re worth.

And they have a nasty habit of breaking your heart into a million tiny pieces.

So she’ll sit through all of Simon’s touchy feely crap and go home and get on with her life. Except Simon isn’t really spouting crap, and when he smiles at her, the butterflies are ridiculous.

Never mixing business with pleasure, Simon finds Charly, a bright spot in a universe that’s been dark for too long. But will he be able to resist her?

And why would he want to?

EXCERPT:

“Hi there, handsome.”
“Well, hello, love.”
“You know,” I say as I lock the door behind him, then walk to my counter to close out the till and get ready to leave. “I’ve discovered that since you’ve been here, you’re very bad for my productivity.”
“How is that?” He leans on the counter and braces his chin on his fist, watching me.
“I’m closing the shop early, for one.”
“I do believe the sign in the window says you close at six.” He checks his watch. “And look at that, it’s six.”
“I haven’t actually closed at six since…well, I don’t remember. I usually chat with customers, redesign displays, shop for new stock. But most of that has been set aside because I seem to be spending most of my time with a certain sexy Brit. It’s a good thing you’re cute.”
He raises a brow and stands to full height, taking my breath away. His ink is on display again in a simple black T-shirt, stretched over wide, muscular shoulders.
Where did my knees go again?
“Cute, am I?”
His accent gets even thicker when he’s turned on, and it’s on full blast now.
“Adorable.”
He slowly circles around the counter and leans into me, pinning my hips against it. His lips are inches from mine.
“I don’t think a man is supposed to be cute.
“No?” Oh, God, I can’t breathe right when he’s this close to me. His hands are on my hips now, his fingers under the hem of my blouse, and then gliding up my skin and over my bra to cup my breasts.
“We shouldn’t do this here.” Is that my voice? I sound breathy and turned on, which is pretty accurate.
“No one is here,” he says and brushes feather-soft kisses over my cheek to my ear. My body is one giant shiver. Thank God for the giant display I built today that blocks us from outside traffic.
As if by their own volition, my hands make their way down the back of his jeans to cup his very fine ass just as he nips my neck, making me gasp.
“How cute am I now?” he whispers, never taking his lips from my skin.
“You’re just precious,” I reply, hearing my own accent thicken along with his cock pressed to my belly.
“You make me laugh,” he says, smiling against my neck. “You make me so hard it hurts. And I’m grateful that you’re wearing a skirt.”
“Why is that?”
He reaches down and balls the material in his fists, raising it above my waist.
“You’re not wearing panties,” he says with surprise, his blue eyes pinned to mine.
“Not today.”

Strongest_Steel (1) THE STRONGEST STEEL by Scarlett Cole Book Blurb: "An incredible story about healing, pain, and trust...you don't want to miss this one!" --New York Times bestselling author Jen McLaughlin "I know what you're up to," she said. "And what would that be?" he asked with a devious smirk. "You know." "Is it working?" She looked over her shoulder to where he was still reclining against the wall, watching her patiently. All the reasons she'd vowed to stay alone, to remain uninvolved, fled as he grinned at her. "Maybe." In Scarlett Cole's The Strongest Steel, Harper Connelly never expected to find herself outside of a tattoo parlor at one in the morning. The scars that decorate her back are just one more reminder of things she'd rather forget, the past she wants to leave far behind her, but before she can move on, she needs him. Trent Andrews has his own reasons for specializing in inking over scars. And there's no way in hell he's going to turn Harper away. Not when a swirling mix of tenderness and desire slams into him every time he sees her. Being with Harper is like going ten rounds in the ring―exhilarating, powerful, and dangerous. She stirs feelings in him he thought were long gone... if he can only get past her carefully constructed defenses. Running was the only thing that saved Harper last time, but each session at Second Circle Tattoos brings her closer and closer to Trent. His lingering touches seduce her, making her believe in a life without fear, where she can be happy, whole, in love. But when cryptic messages start appearing on Harper's phone, strange deliveries arrive at her door, and Second Circle is vandalized, Harper is convinced that her ex-boyfriend has tracked her down, and worse, that he knows about Trent. She ran from her past once before; this time will she have the strength to fight back?

"This book gave me so many feels! Angst, passion, and love all set in Miami, my favorite city. I can't wait for more from this author and I can't recommend this book enough." - Sidney Halston,USA Today bestselling author of Against the Cage

KRISTI ANN HUNTER_NobleMasquerade (1) A NOBLE MASQUERADE by Kristi Ann Hunter

Book Blurb: Lady Miranda Hawthorne acts every inch the lady, but inside she longs to be bold and carefree. Entering her fourth Season and approaching spinsterhood in the eyes of society, she pours her innermost feelings out not in a diary but in letters to her brother's old school friend, a duke--with no intention of ever sending these private thoughts to a man she's heard stories about but never met. Meanwhile, she also finds herself intrigued by Marlow, her brother's new valet, and although she may wish to break free of the strictures that bind her, falling in love with a servant is more of a rebellion than she planned. When Marlow accidentally discovers and mails one of the letters to her unwitting confidant, Miranda is beyond mortified. And even more shocked when the duke returns her note with one of his own that initiates a courtship-by-mail. Insecurity about her lack of suitors shifts into confusion at her growing feelings for two men--one she's never met but whose words deeply resonate with her heart, and one she has come to depend on but whose behavior is more and more suspicious. When it becomes apparent state secrets are at risk and Marlow is right in the thick of the conflict, one thing is certain: Miranda's heart is far from all that's at risk for the Hawthornes and those they love.
